SYNOPSIS OF SELECTED COURSES FROM BSC OF SCIENCE (BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT) PROGRAMME RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE CHANGE COURSES
MMB3223 Management and Conservation of Marine Biodiversity
This course introduces the factors that threaten marine biodiversity, as well as principles and methods in managing and conserving the marine environment. Introduction to international, national and local organizations involved in environmental conservation and marine biodiversity.
MMB3243 Estuarine and Mangrove Ecology
This course explains about the ecology, importance and area of estuaries and mangrove forests in the world, especially in Malaysia. In particular, the aspects that will be discussed in this course include the characteristics and types of estuaries and mangroves, adaptation, distribution, biological diversity, food network and nutrient cycle. In addition, the importance of economics, threats, management and scientific studies in estuaries and mangroves will also be discussed.
MMB3263 Ocean Biology and Human Health
Human health can be influenced by multiple factors. Recent studies have shown oceanic factors can be a major contributor and risk to human health. Through this course, students will understand and relate the roles, benefits and threats of biological ocean, and integrate different sectors and institutions through scientific and policymaking approach to ensure oceans are protected and ensures sustainability of the marine environment.
MMB3343 Coral Reef Biology and Ecology
This subject aim to expose the student about coral reef biology and the importance of this ecosystem in marine environment. Topics that are covered in this subject includes coral reef areas in Malaysia, taxonomy, growth, reproduction, physiology and ecology of coral reefs, the building process of coral reefs, symbiotic relationship in coral, coral reefs as a habitat and its importance, geology of coral reefs, natural and anthropogenic threats on coral reefs. On top of that, the student will be exposed on the management and conservation aspects on coral reefs
