The free market concept aims to provide free used goods such as clothing, books, electrical equipment to those in need. Public can send and collect stuff that are beneficial to the collection centre. This program aims to reduce the delivery of materials to landfill whilst benefit others in need. This program has been carried for three times in year 2023.

Mushroom Entrepreneurship Program

UMT, in collaboration with the Institute of Climate Change and Adaptation and the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Science, initiated a program focused on mushroom entrepreneurship for orphanages in the vicinity of Kuala Terengganu. The primary objective of this program was to promote sustainable mushroom cultivation, utilizing waste materials, particularly agricultural byproducts like sawdust as the growth substrate. The program’s core aim was to empower young entrepreneurs, enabling them to cultivate mushrooms in limited spaces as a means of income generation. Referred to as the ‘Mushroom Entrepreneurship Program,’ this endeavor was carried out in partnership with Fatisha Agrofarm Sdn. Bhd., serving as our industry collaborator. The program took place on two occasions, first on September 16, 2022, and then on February 14, 2023, and involved a total of 64 students from Asrama Puteri Pra-Tahfiz PERKAYA, Rumah Tunas Harapan Darul Hilmi, and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim dan Miskin Darul Akhyar.

Throughout the workshops, students were exposed to both hands-on practical experience and theoretical knowledge regarding the cultivation and entrepreneurial aspects of oyster mushrooms. This comprehensive program was designed to convert waste materials into valuable products, aligning with sustainable development goals, particularly SDG1 (No Poverty), SDG2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Reusable Strawless Tumbler Campaign with Marmoris Café

The campaign on strawless and purchase of reusable tumbler was launched in the August 2023 by the Marmoris Café. The aim of this programme is to minimize the usage of one-off plastic cup for takeaways. In addition, customer who bring and use tumbler are given discount on certain item of purchase. To date, this programme is still ongoing.

Trash to Cash

The “Trash to Cash” initiative has been implemented on three separate occasions. The first and second series took place on July 14 and July 18, 2022, while the third and fourth iterations were conducted on February 10 and February 20, 2023, respectively. During these events, a total of 1670 kilograms of waste was gathered and subsequently exchanged for a cash value of RM1183.00.

The program involved the exchange of recyclable materials for cash, with items such as used cooking oils and electronic waste being among the recyclables submitted. The positive reception and participation in this program have paved the way for its continuation in the future, reflecting its effectiveness and the community’s willingness to actively engage in recycling efforts.
