TeknoHijau: Technology Awareness, Love Our Earth
KUALA NERUS, 28 June 2026 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), through the Sustainable Management Centre, the Centre for Co-Curriculum and Student Development, and the Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology (FTKK), successfully organised the TeknoHijau: Technology Awareness, Love Our Earth programme under the Teroka STEM Cilik community engagement initiative. The programme brought together 90 pupils from SK Rengas Bekah and UMT students. Led by Ts. Dr. Mohammad Hakim Che Harun, the initiative aimed to enhance environmental sustainability awareness through STEM education, green technology, and leadership development.
Carrying the theme “Protecting Our Earth, Shaping Our Future,” the programme supported UMT Sustainability Day by promoting green practices, strengthening community engagement, and introducing technology as a practical solution to sustainability challenges. An experiential learning approach was adopted to help participants understand scientific and technological concepts through interactive, enjoyable, and hands-on activities.
Throughout the programme, participants took part in a variety of activities, including Sustainable Digital Literacy, Logical Thinking and Instruction, renewable energy technology demonstrations, and group-based activities that encouraged them to develop innovative and sustainable solutions. Participants also engaged in several hands-on STEM activities such as Salt Crystal Suncatcher, Sand Castle Challenge, and kite construction, providing practical exposure to crystal formation, structural stability, engineering concepts, and the principles of aerodynamics.
A distinctive feature of the programme was the integration of leadership development into every activity. Participants were guided to collaborate in teams, make decisions, solve problems, and present their ideas through activities such as Shining for Excellence: Public Speaking, Simulation Game: Young Leaders Debate, Leadership Development Training (LDT), and Knowledge Exploration. These activities strengthened participants’ self-confidence, communication skills, and leadership qualities, while highlighting that the advancement of green technology requires critical, creative, and responsible leaders capable of developing sustainable solutions.
The programme also provided valuable learning opportunities for UMT students serving as facilitators by enhancing their communication, leadership, programme management, and volunteerism skills. The initiative contributed directly to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). This initiative reflects UMT’s continued commitment to nurturing a generation that is STEM-literate, equipped with strong leadership capabilities, and dedicated to sustainable development through meaningful collaboration between the university and the community.
TeknoHijau: Celik Teknologi, Cintai Bumi
