SYNOPSIS OF SELECTED COURSES FROM BSC OF SCIENCE (MARINE SCIENCE) PROGRAMME RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE CHANGE COURSES

MMS3053 Environmental Pollution

This course provides understanding the types, causes and effects of environmental pollution and how to address these issues. Students are also exposed to the major types of pollutants that contribute to pollution. Current pollution issues will also be discussing in this course.

MMS3003 Environment – Issue and Global Perspective

This course equips the student with environmental science knowledge and develops the ability to understand global environmental issues. Students will be able to devise ethical and politically viable plans and strategies to address these issues while balancing the impacts on the society and economy.

MMS3103 Ocean, Atmosphere and Climate

This course introduces the fundamentals of atmospheric processes with special emphasis on ocean-atmosphere interactions and their role in the global climate change. Topics include atmospheric composition and structure, solar radiation and heat budget, hydrologic cycle, ocean and atmospheric circulation, climate system, natural climate variability of ENSO and MJO, and the ocean`s role in response to climate change. Theory is complemented by a series of tutorial and student-led discussion based on global historical climate data and the recent IPCC report.

Elective Courses (Open to takers from other faculties or institutions)

BDY3443 Climate Change Biology

Climate change is a global phenomenon facing everyone. This course will expose students on the issues, causes and mitigation efforts related to climate change from the biological perspective. The course’s knowledge will increase students’ awareness of global and local environmental issues and contribute significantly to the cause as individuals, community members, and national levels.

BDY3353 Coral, Reef and Climate Change

Climate change has affected coral reefs around the world. In recent times, the problem of coral bleaching has occurred more frequently. This course fills a vacant niche by bringing together available scientific information on coral bleaching at different space and time scales from the deep geological record through to future projections. By focussing on the different aspects of the coral bleaching phenomenon from various documents, this course highlights the vulnerability of coral reefs in a changing climate. This course describes the ongoing climate change phenomenon and its impact on coral reef life. In particular, the aspects that will be discussed in this course include ecosystems and climate change. The effects of climate change on coral reefs can be carried out by monitoring and determining the resilience capacity of coral reefs to these phenomena. In addition, aspects of future expectations, implications for conservation and mitigation measures are also discussed.
