UMT Achieves 60% Reduction in Carbon Footprint and Strengthens Air Quality Monitoring Efforts

The Atmospheric and Climate Change Research Group, led by Ts. Dr. Noor Zaitun Yahaya of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), has reported a significant 60.08% reduction in the university’s total carbon footprint in 2025 compared to 2024. The Carbon Footprint Assessment 2025 recorded a decrease from 19,235.66 metric tons of CO₂ in 2024 to 11,559.00 metric tons in 2025, representing a total reduction of 7,676.66 metric tons. This achievement indicates that UMT now emits only 39.92% of its previous year’s emissions, highlighting the university’s substantial progress toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient campus.

As part of the assessment, a three-month air quality monitoring campaign was conducted at two strategic locations—the main entrance and the academic zone of UMT—using advanced Air Gradient sensors. The monitoring results demonstrated a consistent improvement in ambient air quality, with notably lower particulate matter (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀) concentrations recorded during non-peak traffic hours. These findings suggest that UMT’s initiatives, including centralized student transportation systems, reduced reliance on private vehicles, and enhanced awareness of sustainable mobility practices, have directly contributed to improved air quality across the campus.

Overall, the combined achievements in carbon footprint reduction and air quality improvement underscore UMT’s leadership in environmental stewardship and its strong commitment to Malaysia’s Net-Zero 2050 target, while further reinforcing its position among the top sustainable universities in the UI Green Metric World University Ranking.
